Why Do We Have Wisdom Teeth?
In the early days of the human history, Homo sapiens ate lots of really rough foods, e.g. nuts, plant roots and leaves. We required wisdom teeth to chew and digest these rough foods properly. However, technological development changed our eating habits dramatically. During the last two to five thousand years we started cultivating crops and learned to process, grind, and cook them for easier chewing. Furthermore, we made special tableware like forks and knives that reduced the required chewing effort even further. So today we consume much softer meals than our ancestors used to.

- A tooth has broken through under an unusual angle and is rubbing against other teeth. In other instances it may also damage your cheek or tongue;

- Rinse the affected area with warm saline solution;
- Reduce your chewing efforts to the minimum and remove all rough foods from your diet: no nuts, veggies, cereals, etc.;
- Whenever possible, substitute your common meals with liquid diet;
- Use ice cubes to relieve pain. Apply ice to the affected gum to freeze it and, thus, reduce the pain for certain time.
Certainly, various over-the-counter and prescription-based pain relievers can help you get rid of wisdom tooth pain, too. In fact, if you experience some strong wisdom tooth symptoms, like jaw stiffness and severe throbbing pain, these may be your only viable remedy before you consult a dentist.
